For first-time visitors, following Japan’s “golden path” offers an excellent introduction to the country's diversity, culture, and vibrancy.
This route generally includes Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, and sometimes Hiroshima. It's a popular itinerary for good reason as it gives travellers a well-rounded taste of everything Japan has to offer. From bustling modern cities to historic temples, cultural experiences, and beautiful natural landscapes.
Tokyo, Japan’s capital, deserves at least a couple of days to explore fully. There’s something for everyone here. From historic shrines to vending machines selling anything and everything.
Tokyo is also a fantastic base for day trips, allowing visitors to branch out and see a different side of Japan. Ashikaga is a beautiful option for a day trip, especially for nature lovers. The Ashikaga Flower Park, with its sprawling, colourful displays, is particularly enchanting in spring when the wisteria is in full bloom.
Another popular choice is Nikko, known for its historic temples and shrines, including the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Toshogu Shrine.
For those seeking relaxation, Hakone offers soothing hot springs and breathtaking views of Mount Fuji. Madoka No Mori, a private onsen in Hakone, is highly recommended for a unique and serene experience.
Back in Tokyo, Shibuya Crossing is iconic and one of the busiest intersections in the world. A fun tip is to head to the Starbucks located right above the crossing; it offers a fantastic view of the crowds below, making it the perfect spot for some people-watching and a chance to soak in the city’s energy.
For travellers heading to Kyoto, staying in Osaka is a more economical and convenient option. Osaka is just a 20-minute train ride from Kyoto, making it an ideal home base for day trips.
This setup allows visitors to enjoy Osaka’s vibrant food scene (okonomiyaki!) and nightlife while easily accessing Kyoto's serene temples and traditional charm. Osaka also offers convenient day trips to nearby destinations like Nara, known for the deer that roam freely. It’s an amazing experience to hand-feed the deer and explore Nara's historic temples.
Another option is Himeji, where you can visit Japan’s most iconic castle, Himeji Castle. Often referred to as the “White Heron Castle” due to its brilliant white exterior, it’s one of Japan’s most beautiful and well-preserved castles. Another picturesque destination is Kurashiki, nicknamed “the Venice of Japan” for its scenic canal district. With its charming atmosphere, Kurashiki is perfect for a relaxing day of strolling through narrow streets and traditional shops.
If you venture to Hiroshima, a trip to Miyajima Island is essential. Miyajima is famous for its floating Torii gate, which seems to hover over the water during high tide. This UNESCO World Heritage site is even more magical at sunrise or sunset, with the gate framed by the glow of the sun. For early risers, sunrise offers a peaceful and spiritual experience, while sunset paints the sky with warm hues, creating a picturesque backdrop.
